On 25 September 1066, as Harold Godwinson's army advanced on the Viking force at Stamford Bridge, a single Norse warrior took his stand on the narrow wooden bridge and held it alone. Armed with a great axe, he cut down man after man — reportedly killing forty English soldiers before he was finally brought down by a spear thrust from beneath the bridge. His name was never recorded. He bought Harald Hardrada's army precious time, and history remembered him only as the Axeman of Stamford Bridge. This canvas captures that moment — one warrior, one bridge, a brooding sky, and the last stand of the Viking Age in England.
