He carried his raven banner, Land Waster, the flag that had never been defeated in battle. By the end of the day, he was dead, his army broken, and the Viking Age in England was effectively over. Who was Harald Hardrada?
Harald Sigurdsson — known as Hardrada, meaning "hard ruler" — was King of Norway and one of the most formidable warriors of the 11th century. He fought across the Byzantine Empire, the Mediterranean, and Scandinavia before launching his invasion of England in 1066. His raven banner, Land Waster, was said to have never been defeated in battle. He was killed at Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066, bringing the Viking Age in England to a close.
What was the Land Waster banner?
Land Waster — Landøyðan in Old Norse — was Harald Hardrada's personal raven banner. According to the sagas, it was said to bring victory to whoever marched behind it, but death to the one who carried it. It had never been defeated in battle before Stamford Bridge. The banner is the centrepiece of this design — a symbol of the last great Viking invasion of England.
What was the Battle of Stamford Bridge?
Fought on 25 September 1066, Stamford Bridge was the decisive battle that ended the Viking invasion of England. Harald Hardrada and his ally Tostig Godwinson were defeated and killed by Harold Godwinson's English army. The victory came at a cost — Harold then had to march south immediately to face William of Normandy at Hastings, just three weeks later.
