On 25 September 1066, a single Norse warrior took his stand on the narrow bridge over the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge and held it alone against Harold Godwinson's entire army. The sagas say he cut down as many as forty Englishmen before he was finally brought down — not by a blade, but by a spear driven upward through the planking from a boat beneath. His name was never recorded. His stand was never forgotten.
